Citrix, VMware, & Microsoft Latest Products - Recommended versions and known issues

"What version is the latest?" and "Can I install X now on the server?" are some of the common implementation questions we receive. So here is my list of recommendations for product versions and some of the known issues on integrating latest versions of some products.

LAST UPDATED: January 8th, 2007

VMware

  • VMware ESX 3.5 or VMware ESX 3i version 3.5
  • VMware VirtualCenter 2.5
  • VMware Consolidated Backup 1.1
  • VMware Lab Manager 2.5.1

Citrix Recommended Hotfix and Rollup list

*Note: Depending on when you downloaded 4.5 media, it may include Rollup 1 already integrated. Download the latest from the Citrix website.

Microsoft SQL 2005 SP2

Microsoft Operations Manager 2007

Microsoft Office 2007

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

  • Known Issues with Citrix Access Gateway: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX111804&searchID=-1
  • Test all of your internal and external (FedEx, UPS, Salesforce, etc) web applications to ensure functionality with IE 7 prior to performing an upgrade. If all applications function, then IE 7 can be implements on Presentation Server.

Microsoft Vista

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2

  • Released on March 14, 2007
  • All the recent Citrix and VMware Products listed above have been tested and supported by both companies.
  • Initial testing has been successful on Presentation Server 4.0 with Rollup 3 installed prior.
  • If you are not running SP1 on your servers now, be careful and test SP2. SP1 is considered a major service pack in that it made modifications to the server security. SP2 is a rollup of SP1 and all hotfixes since. So if you are not running SP1, test SP2 in development or test environments before performing the upgrade.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2

  • All the recent Citrix and VMware Products listed above have been tested and supported by both companies.
  • It is recommended to not install .NET 2.0 unless required by the product/application you will be integrating

Microsoft .NET 2.0

  • Supported with all the latest versions of Citrix (Presentation Server 4.5, Password Manager 4.5, Access Gateway Advanced 4.5, EdgsSight 4.2 SP2)
  • If using an older version of the above and you need .NET 2.0 installed for your application, see the following article to create a mmc.exe.config to force it to use .NET 1.1
    http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX108104&searchID=40701425

Microsoft .NET 3.0

  • Not tested or supported at this time by any Citrix product
  • Citrix EdgeSight does not seem to like this being on the server.
  • For Citrix Presentation, read http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX113636 which explains how to have Side-by-side .NET Framework Support for Presentation Server.
